Three recent deaths in Indonesia have been confirmed as cases of infection by the H5N1 avian influenza virus, according to the World Health Organization.

The latest fatality was a 67-year-old woman who died eight days after being hospitalized in West Java Province. She reportedly had purchased live chickens at a market prior to becoming ill.

There have been two other confirmed bird flu deaths in the past week: An 11-year-old boy from South Jakarta died on Oct. 14, and a 27-year-old woman died on Oct. 13.

The total number of H5N1 bird flu cases confirmed in Indonesia is now 72.
