Andrew Z. Fire of Stanford University and Craig C. Mello of the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester have been awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine.
The scientists received the $1.4 million prize for their discovery of RNA interference, a way of controlling the flow of genetic information.
In RNA interference, certain molecules inactivate or destroy the messenger RNA from a particular gene, preventing the production of protein. The gene is thus silenced.
Their work could lead to new treatments for heart disease, cancer, AIDS, blindness and many other health problems. |
