The compulsion to shop and buy unnecessary merchandise -- even if it means going into debt, going bankrupt and even destroying marriages in the process -- is a gender-neutral disorder, indicates a new study published in the
American Journal of Psychiatry.
While the stereotypical compulsive shopper is female, men are just as likely to be affected, reports a Stanford University research team.
An estimated 5 percent of US adults are unable to control their shopping impulse.
The disorder is characterized by lying to cover up shopping binges. It can lead to depression and even suicidal behavior. |
