Two American sisters were among more than 700 people injured in explosions that targeted three subway stations and a double-decker bus during the morning rush hour last week.
Two Tennessee sisters injured in last week's London bombings have returned to the United States for further treatment at Duke University Medical Center, the medical center said. Kathleen "Katie" Benton, 21, and Emily Benton, 20, of Knoxville, Tenn., had been aboard one of the three subway cars hit by almost simultaneous explosions Thursday. Both were returned to the US on Sunday.
The blast left Emily Benton with some broken bones and skin missing on her feet, which required two surgeries in London, her family said on a Web site maintained by their church. Katie Benton suffered shrapnel wounds in her back, neck and legs, the family said.
More Than 700 People Injured
The sisters were among more than 700 people injured in explosions that targeted three subway stations and a double-decker bus during the morning rush hour Thursday, State Department spokesman Tom Casey said. Two other Americans were treated for injuries and released, Casey said.
Katie Benton is a student at the University of Tennessee, and Emily is a student at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Knoxville.
