A series of raids by federal agents led to the closure of several medical marijuana facilities and a number of arrests in northern California.
Federal agents shut three medical marijuana dispensaries in San Francisco and arrested 13 people on organized crime money laundering charges.
San Francisco sheriff's officials said 11 men and two women were in the county jail in connection with the case and would appear in federal court Thursday.
At Least 10 Warehouses
Authorities said the group's members were mostly of Asian descent who controlled at least 10 warehouses where marijuana was grown in quantities valued at millions of dollars, the San Francisco Chronicle said.
While California law permits the sale of marijuana for medical reasons, two weeks ago the US Supreme Court ruled the federal government had the authority to prosecute people whose activities are legal under state law but illegal under federal regulations.
