Britain is crippling healthcare systems in sub-Saharan Africa by poaching medical staff, British doctors warn. As Britain hosts the G8 summit in July, there is a unique opportunity to halt the brain drain from poor to rich nations, they told the
Lancet medical journal in a report published Friday.
Dr. John Eastwood and his colleagues from St. George's Medical School in London warned financially compensating poor nations for their loss of medical staff would not work.
Britain has an ethical code meaning it will not actively recruit from certain developing countries, including sub-Saharan Africa.
But workers are free to apply for jobs in Britain.
