Babies May Understand Words Sooner Than Parents Think

Children younger than one year old can learn words for things outside their daily routine, despite widespread belief to the contrary on the part of many parents, educators and researchers, who think learning specific words does not begin until well into the second year.
What is considered "formal" learning of a word may be underway long before children say much, suggests new research by Dr. Graham Schafer of the School of Psychology, published in the January/February 2005 issue of the journal Child Development.
