Family Awarded Compensation in Case Linking Vaccines to Autism

The family of a girl who developed autism after receiving nine doses of vaccines in a single day has been awarded compensation under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. Though there has been controversy over whether vaccines may contribute to the development of autism for several years, the U.S. government continues to maintain its stance that there is no evidence to support such a link and says all children should receive the recommended immunizations.

From Lynn Nielsen-Bohlman, Ph.D.:

There are three things parents need to know about vaccines ...

First, the child determined by the Federal government to have suffered neurological damage as a result of vaccines had a rare and serious metabolic mitochondrial disorder.

While there is no question that the vaccinations the child received contributed to or caused this child's illness, a vaccine which would not harm a healthy child may worsen the health of a child with metabolic disorder.

Second, it is fairly easy to avoid giving an infant or child a large number of vaccinations at one time by making a series of appointments about one month apart.

Finally, the diseases prevented by vaccines are dangerous.  If a woman who was never vaccinated for measles contracts measles while she is pregnant, the damage to her baby is terrible. For example, Helen Keller suffered because her mother was infected with measles during pregnancy.
