An advisory panel to the US
Food and Drug Administration said Friday that over-the-counter medications to treat coughs and other cold and flu symptoms should not be given to children under the age of 6. Despite the anecdotal experiences of many parents who believe these remedies are beneficial to their sick youngsters, the panel maintained there is no clinical evidence demonstrating effectiveness in children under 12.
In addition to doubts over their effectiveness, the panel expressed concerns over the safety of using these medications to treat young children.
