If you are contemplating fatherhood, you might want to consider limiting cell phone use. New research indicates that the microwaves they give off have a significant negative impact on the number, mobility and quality of sperm in the men who use cell phones the most.
Cell phone use continues to climb, with the global number now close to a billion and rising.
If just a small percentage of men were to become infertile due to their use, the overall number could nevertheless be in the millions.
Scientists at The Cleveland Clinic evaluated 364 men and found that the average sperm count among those who did not use cell phones at all was 86 million per milliliter.
Those who used cell phones less than two hours a day averaged 76 million per mL, and those who used cell phones two to four hours a day had average sperm counts of 71 million per mL.
The men who said they used their cell phones more than four hours a day had the lowest average sperm counts, at 66 million per mL.
All of the results, including the lowest, were well above the 20 million per mL sperm level that represents the low end of the normal range.
The research team emphasized that further study is needed to see if their observations are supported. |
