Nutritional Benefits Lost Due to Fear of Fish

Fear of mercury and other contaminants in fish is discouraging people from eating a food that provides important health benefits, according to new research published in the
Journal of the American Medical Association.
Consuming fish twice a week is advisable for most people, the research suggests.
In a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, eating fish resulted in 36 percent lower risk of death from heart disease and 17 percent lower mortality overall.
The US government does not provide adequate information to consumers about how to choose fish that are safest to eat, charged the National Academy of Sciences, a failure that has resulted in widespread confusion.
More testing for toxic substances in fish also is needed, the scientific advisory body said. |
