Several batches of blood glucose test strips that are for sale in the US are counterfeit, warned the
Food and Drug Administration, and their use by diabetics could lead to serious problems -- even death.
The counterfeit strips are being sold under at least two brand names:
One Touch Basic Profile with lot numbers 272894A, 2619932 or 2606340
One Touch Ultra with the lot number 2691191
The strips are designed for use with several models of One Touch brand blood glucose monitors from
LifeScan Inc., a unit of Johnson & Johnson.
The fake test strips could give incorrect blood glucose readings that might cause patients to take the wrong amount of insulin, according to the FDA. However, no injuries have been reported to date.
Anyone in possession of the counterfeit strips should immediately replace them and contact their physician, the FDA advised.
LifeScan said it is notifying pharmacists, distributors and wholesalers about the counterfeit strips. Customers should contact the place of purchase to obtain restitution, the company said.
Anyone who discovers the counterfeit products is encouraged to call LifeScan at 866-621-4855. In addition, any patient or healthcare professional that discovers counterfeit products should file a report online with FDA's
MedWatch program or call 800 FDA-1088. |
