Air pollution is responsible for the premature deaths of 2 million people a year, mostly in developing nations, according to the
World Health Organization.
The UN health agency called on governments to take steps to improve air quality in cities.
Burning fossil fuels is one of the most far-reaching threats to public health, WHO warned.
It noted that lowering the levels of particulates in the air could save up to 300,000 lives annually.
Particulates are particles of pollutants that are too small to be filtered out by the nose and throat and end up in the lungs where they can lead to disease. |
