heart attack stroke job loss
'Involuntary [job loss] takes away any level of control for an employee and can be very stressful,' said Ellen Mason, a British cardiac nurse.
Losing a job when you're over 50 doubles the risk of a heart attack or stroke, experts said yesterday. A study of 4,000 found those discharged in later life suffered "exceptional stress" compared with those employed.

US researchers from Yale University said: "For many, late career job loss increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke." And they warned doctors should be aware of such physical effects.

Loss of Control

Ellen Mason, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation said: "Involuntary [job loss] takes away any level of control for an employee and can be very stressful.

"But other distressing situations, such as family bereavement, may have also contributed to the risk of heart disease."

The findings are in the British Medical Journal.
