The bird flu strain is endemic in poultry in some parts of Southeast Asia, and has killed 68 people in the region since late 2003.
A 25-year-old woman has died from the H5N1 bird flu virus in a Jakarta hospital, Indonesian health officials said Wednesday.
Endang Mamahit, senior researcher at the country's Health Ministry, confirmed its tests had shown the woman had contracted the virus, but said the results would have to be confirmed by a Hong Kong-based laboratory affiliated with the
World Health Organization.
If the diagnosis is confirmed, she would be the country's eighth death from avian flu, the BBC said.
Endemic in Poultry
A hospital spokesman said the woman had been in contact with dead chickens before being admitted on Nov. 24.
The bird flu strain is endemic in poultry in some parts of Southeast Asia, and has killed 68 people in the region since late 2003.
