Many Americans are acutely aware that smoking can cause cancer. Today, the Great American Smokeout, the American Cancer Society's annual campaign to encourage smokers to kick the habit -- at least for one day -- dramatizes that danger. However, a new survey suggests that an alarming number of smokers are oblivious to the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) despite experiencing symptoms.
