Prolacta Bioscience donor breast milk
Breast milk helps premature infants to maintain their pH level and avoid colitis and sepsis, which attack the gastrointestinal tract.
A California firm is set to be the nation's first large-scale commercial processing facility of donor breast milk.

Founded in 1999 as International Milk Science, Prolacta Bioscience in Monrovia, Calif., is ready to begin new pharmaceutical therapies for premature babies, reported Whittierdailynews.com, of the Los Angeles Newspaper group.

New Era in Pediatric Care

The Monrovia facility will commercialize breast milk donations, in the hope of mass-delivering breast milk to neonatal intensive care units to treat low birth-weight babies, who weigh less than 2 pounds, 3 ounces.

"It's the birth of a completely new era in pediatric care," said Dr. Elena Nedo, chief executive and found of Prolacta Bioscience. "I expected it to happen faster, but we're really happy to be here."

Breast milk helps the premature infants to maintain their pH level and avoid colitis and sepsis, which attack the gastrointestinal tract, Nedo said.
