Two American tourists who were 10 feet from the Edgware Road Tube bomb told today how they survived the blast. Sisters Katie and Emily Benton, on the first day of a holiday, were shielded from the full force of the explosion by other commuters, who died. Both are back in the US, where they have had reconstructive surgery.
Lights Went Out
The two described how the lights went out in the Tube train carriage. The explosion made them feel as if they were on fire, said Dr. Gregory Georgiade, at the Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina.
He added: "Some people in front of them in the subway car are dead -- they took the hit."
Emily, 20, an interior design student at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in the family's home town of Knoxville, Tennessee, suffered broken bones and severe burns to her feet.
Katie, 21, at the University of Tennessee training to be a vet, sustained shrapnel wounds. Each sister's right eardrum was "blown out."
