Caffeine was taken off the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned substances 18 months ago. The new finding that it boosts athletic performance is likely to reopen the debate.
Drinking coffee and cola could turn athletes into world beaters, scientists claimed yesterday. Caffeine not only lifts alertness but also improves physical performance as it increases the rate at which the body takes up energy, said University of Birmingham researchers.
And the 26 percent boost would be of particular benefit to endurance sportsmen like cyclists and long-distance runners.
New Generation of Sports Drinks?
Three different sports drinks were given to road cycling teams -- and those on the one laced with caffeine proved the best.
Now the findings will reopen the debate about the stimulant, which was taken off the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned substances 18 months ago.
A research spokesman said: "If it stays off, a new generation of sports drinks could hit the market."
